During the Minimalist House Cleanse for the new year, which I am still in the process of, I found a point that I really wanted to focus on and that’s my wardrobe. It contains a lot of pieces which I love and I wear all the time and a even bigger amount of pieces which I wear on special occasions or never and then a collection of clothes that I wear at home or at the gym. That’s when I realized that my wardrobe was in real need of a minimalist on-the-spot treatment. It was time to take serious decisions about the future of my clothes and my style.
Building a minimalist wardrobe allows us to focus on creating a functional and meaningful collection of clothes, where quality is more important that quantity. Rather than mindlessly buying fast fashion pieces, it’s about timelessness, comfort and functionality. There are tones of guides and many different methods on how to create a minimalist wardrobe online that one could try. Here are some basic starting points on how to edit your wardrobe the minimalist way.
Empty and Pile
Completely empty your wardrobe. Take literally everything out, from coats to skirts, from gym clothes to lingerie and nightwear and don’t forget your shoes (you might need a large space in order to do that). Start pilling everything in two main categories: ‘To Keep’ and ‘To Go’. Don’t think much about this first division, but be firm and ask yourself ‘Do I really need this?’ or ‘Am I really ever going to wear that?’
Analyze and Divide
Try on all the items of your ‘Keep’ pile, use a mirror to decide if each piece is flattering for you and if it fits your overall style if not, put them in the ‘To Go’ pile. Be critical and honest with your decisions, before you put back an item on your ‘Keep’ pile. When you finish this process, look at the clothes you are going to keep and find out how many outfits could be created with each piece. After you’ve created a series of possible combinations, see which pieces are left out. You should consider putting these in the ‘To Go’ pile.
Organize and Label
This is the moment to organize your collection. First, identify the basics ( such as jeans, leather pieces, trainers, lingerie and socks) these are the core of your wardrobe and then the ‘extras’ which are the essence of your personal style, the pieces that make your style unique. Start putting everything back and find a way to make everything easy to find. Try color- coding your pieces, separating them by activity, such as ‘office’, ‘night out’, ‘gym’ etc. or any other way that makes you feel confident in finding your next outfit.
Remember, to keep those pieces that you truly enjoy wearing and that you feel comfortable and confident in them. Choose items that are in good condition and that you see yourself wearing in the next days.
