Angelo speaks about his brand, his creative process and his relationship with fashion and all this with an honesty and unpretentiousness that you don’t often meet in the fashion or even arts industry. Read on to discover more about Angelo and Roba di Sangue.
- Who is behind Roba di Sangue? Can you tell us a bit about the project?
Angelo Milano, 33 years old from Grottaglie, a small town in southern Italy. My mom helps me a lot though :) so we’re practically two! I also want to apologize ’cause I’m going to sound pretty arrogant in the following answers, it’s because I really think fashion is 99% bullshit and 1% fun.
- How did you get into fashion? Is Sangue your first fashion initiative?
By mistake! A friend of mine challenged me with the suggestion that I should make a collection. He had seen some T- shirts of mine that I was making for myself and I just went for it. I only liked the idea of betting on something new and unexplored for me.
- Each one Roba di Sangue’s collections is different and unique. Where does your inspiration come from?
The first ones were about the aesthetic of my town and region. Now it’s more about what can come out of my hands instinctively and randomly. I take very few days when I have to design the collection and it’s all very improvised, what comes first is what I put in as a collection.
- Your SS16 collection is like wearable art, can you tell us about the process of making it? What is the story behind it?
I had 5 days to make all the samples and printing, so I didn’t even bother using a computer to design the styles or the patterns, I just went for it. I think it’s the only way I can keep this business entertaining for me as planning and carefully designing a collection would feel like an attempt to feed a stupid market which I don’t care about.
- Your designs are mainly screen- printed on simple T-shirts and garments with plain silhouettes. Is keeping it simple, when it comes to the line of the clothes, important?
Yes, definitely, as the prints are always very noisy and present, the cut of the pieces have to be silent.
- Sangue is a small, but innovative fashion business. Every step of the production, sales and shipping passes by your hands. Is competing with the massive fast- fashion brands hard?
I don’t see myself competing, I really want to play another game and possibly sell my things to people that have the time to give a deeper look at what they are buying and how it was made. Fast fashion brands are for idiots that fulfill their daily need of sense on this planet by spending money on silly useless objects, this describes a good percentage of the population of this planet.
- Are people tired of high- street trends and in search of something more unique?
Judging for what I see around there is no hope, the vast majority of people is always going to buy shit clothes.
- Is Roba di Sangue your only activity, are you participating in other exciting projects?
Sangue is a game, it makes good money, but I’ll never rely on such a silly thing as clothing or fashion, my real job is www.studiocromie.org it’s an art gallery and print studio, where I work with international artists in the production of art and various projects.
