Rogan Brown creates intricately detailed microorganisms for his latest collection, Magic Circle. Using a combination of hand and laser cuts, he creates patterns that occur naturally in bacteria, coral and microbes. Through this work, the Anglo- Irish artist wants to explore the interplay between ‘reality’ and imagination, as every piece is completely fictional and unique.
This hypnotic, all -white sculptures are inspired by Brown’s surroundings (he is currently living in a forest in the South of France), the complexity and variety of the natural world. Each piece requires hard work, including designing, cutting and layering the paper to create this stunning result.
The artist bases his works on the tradition of scientific drawing and model making. However, he uses this only as a starting point, he says ”But although my approach involves careful observation and detailed ‘scientific’ preparatory drawings, these are always superseded by the work of the imagination; everything has to be refracted through the prism of the imagination, estranged and in some way transformed.”
