Who doesn’t love mulled wine? Its bright red color, the soul-warming taste and its amazing smell are all incomparable and make it a must-drink for the cold winter nights. I first tried mulled wine in London, while taking a walk in Brick Lane market’s colorful streets and I was amazed by the delicious taste of orange and spices and also the fact that I could walk around sipping this glorious drink while strolling.
From that moment, it had become my to-go drink in the winter (together with hot chocolate of course) and I had the chance to try various versions of it, in Germany, Austria and Italy. However, I always wanted to make it at home for my friends, as well, filling the house with its amazing aroma and trying different spice combinations and recipes. After a small online research I found out that making mulled wine is not as hard to make as it looks. Here is a simple recipe of tasty mulled wine to make at home, feel free to add spices that you like and make your own combinations!
Ingredients:
1 bottle red wine
2 oranges sliced
1/4 cup honey or 1/2 cup raw cane sugar
1/2 cup brandy or cognac (optional)
Spice it up with: whole cloves, anise stars, black peppercorns, cardamon pods, coriander seeds, cinnamon sticks
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients in a saucepan (if you want put the oranges and spices in a cheececloth to easily remove them afterwards)
- Warm up the mix in low heat, but do not allow it to come to a boil, the longer it heats the tastier it will become.
- When ready, strain and remove cheesecloth or filter the mix to remove spices.
- Serve in a mug and garnish with a cinnamon stick and an orange wedge.
- Enjoy!
