Inspiration can truly come just by stepping outside your front door and Sebastian Errazuriz proves exactly that with his shelving unit called ‘Bilbao’. It is made by a fallen tree branch that the artist found on a Sandiago street and decided to take it back to his workshop, where he re-adapted it so that it could fit a flat wall. The fallen tree branch is now one beautiful, unconventional book shelve.
Even though Errazuriz wants to keep and highlight the natural shape of the tree in his designs, he has sanded down the rough edges and lacquered the wood in black with a matte sheen, creating a modern and polished look while emphasizing the organic forms. In the end, by adding thin panes of glass, he made the shelves functional, while keeping the design simple.
Apart from ‘Bilbao’, the Chilean artist has designed other repurposed tree furniture, always created by fallen trees found in South America. Take a look at ‘The Tree Coffee Table’ and a detail from ‘The Metamorphosis Shelve’ bellow. Minimal and organic, yet functional they are a great addition to any room!
